Worth Sharing: Construction Management Department Takes Home Trophies

Awards, Honors, and Activities 

Chico State Construction Management Department students notched another fantastic year at the recent annual Associated Schools of Construction Competition in Sparks, Nevada.

  • Design Build took 1st place in Region 7, for the second year in a row, under the guidance of Professor Patrick Brittle (pictured above).
  • Heavy Civil took 1st place in Region 7, also for the second year in a row, under the coaching of Professor Chris Souder.
  • Mechanical took 2nd place in the Open Category; Will Pedersen won Best Presenter, under faculty coach Marie Patterson.

The Institute of International Education (IIE) recently recognized Chico State with the Open Doors 75 Seal of Excellence, marking the University’s 75 years of participation of hosting international students on our campus.

In 1949, the first year IIE reported international student participation, Chico State had one international student recorded. In fall of 2024, 282 international students were enrolled on campus.

Publications  

Eran A. Zelnik, a lecturer in the History Department at Chico State, celebrated the recent publication of his book, American Laughter, American Fury: Humor and the Making of a White Man’s Democracy, 1750-1850 (Johns Hopkins University Press, January 2025).

From the book jacket: “Zelnik offers a cultural history of early America that shows how humor among white men served to define and construct not only whiteness and masculinity but also American political culture and democracy more generally.”

Productions

Major video platforms (Amazon, Apple TV, Google Play, and YouTube) are streaming Perfect Sweat, a globetrotting, seven-part documentary to find superb perspiration experiences. It’s based on the 1978 book Sweat by Mikkel Aaland (Photo Journalism, ’74). Aaland, the series host, takes viewers to Finland, Russia, Japan, and even Burning Man to discover the resurgence of ancient rituals, explore diverse cultures and traditions, and showcase the impact of community sweat bathing on the human spirit. Michael Drummond

Michael Drummond is Chico State’s media relations coordinator. He is a Pulitzer Prize finalist, a former war correspondent, author of “Renegades of the Empire,” and enjoys surfing and fishing.
