A line of Corvettes ranging from C1 to C8 lined the streets of a small Texas community Saturday, ready to knock on the door of an elderly veteran and surprise him with thousands of dollars worth of free repairs to his home.
The donation was the result of a lot of hard work by members of the East Texas chapter of Vettes for Vets, who raised the funds through a car show held two weeks ago.
Nominated by his friend Mary Ann Nelson, 78-year-old veteran Jim Rapp told KLTV 7 News reporter Alex Weister that he was so shocked by the kind deed, the usually talkative veteran was left speechless.

“My wife’s been wanting to get the house painted, get the gutters put up,” Rapp said, “but I said we just don’t have the money right now – we’re on fixed income. So the whole thing just blew me out of the water. I can’t remember all the things they’re doing, so I appreciate it so much. I’m just blessed.”
The repairs include a new roof and new appliances, along with a fresh landscape outside, just to mention a few of the things given to the Rapp family.

“You have all these family and friends coming together to help a person, a veteran, in need,” Lindale Mayor Gavin Rasco said, “and everyone’s willing to give of their time, their talent, and their treasures in order to give back to this gentleman that’s given so much to us as a country and as a community.”
Jason Dores, a Marine veteran himself who founded the first chapter of Vettes for Vets by redoing a veteran’s home in South Carolina and has since seen the organization expand into a total of nine states in just three years, even flew into Texas for the special door-knocking ceremony.

“A lot of work coordinating stuff like this, but when you do the door knock and you see all the people here and the community excites,” Dores says, “it just hits reset so everything is just all good again. So if there ever is that day when you’re tired or whatever, this changes everything. It makes it all worth it.”
East Texas Chapter President Benjamin Pate, who just saw that organization complete its first year, says they hope to have all the remodeling completed before Thanksgiving, when they’ll also provide a holiday feast for the Rapp family.
